TOKYO: A Japanese carmaker is developing an electric vehicle that can help electric that can help elderly drivers with braking and steering by detecting slow responses and a lack of attentiveness, officials said.
Autech Japan Inc., affiliated with Nissan Motor Co. Ltd., aims to launch the Micro Utility Vehicle in Japan in 2006 in co-operation with Tokyo University and other institutions.
The vehicle would be equipped with sensors and cameras that would examine movements of the driver's arms, legs and eyes and detect shortcomings in his or her driving skills.
"It is necessary to provide an easy-to-drive, safe means of transport for elderly people to enable their social participation," Autech and its collaborators said in a project plan. The number of senior drivers is expected to surge given Japan's rapidly graying society.
Autech has already developed an electric-powered prototype one-seater, which runs at a maximum speed of 60 kilometers per hour. -AFP

A Bundle of Troubles

Taamenang was a poor African farmer; weighed down by his worries. One morning he decided to carry all his problems to the Almighty God to see whether He could offer a solution. He gathered them up, tied them up in a bundle and carried them up to the house of God. Timidly he knocked on the sacred door. Lightning flashed out and the door flew open, nearly throwing Taamenang to the ground. A voice said from within, "Come in, Mr Taamenang!"
The man struggled in with the bundle on his head.
"What do you want?" asked the voice.
"Almighty God, I know that with You all things are possible. Please reduce my problems to suit my size. My problems are too many and too great for me."
Almighty God laughed and the laugh sounded like thunder. Then He said in a very calm, soothing voice, "My son, step out of the door of this house and throw your bundle down into the valley!"
The man quickly did as God had ordered him.
"My child," came the voice again, "it is forbidden for any living person to be without problems, so go down into the Valley of Tears and choose a bundle that suits your size."
Down in the Valley of Tears, Taamenang examined the many bundles that had been thrown there. After spending the whole day weighing all of them, he discovered the lightest one and thought that it would be quite suitable for him. He carried it up to the door of the Almighty and stood smiling and waiting. Soon the door flashed open and Taamenang walked in. Then, he spoke delightedly to God, "Almighty, I have found the lightest bundle for myself."
God replied with a deep booming laugh that shook the whole house to its very foundations. "My son," He said to Taamenang, "the bundle you have selected is the very same bundle that you threw down into the valley this morning."

A Lot of Rubbish

There have been many complaints recently about the Colony's garbage collection service. The Urban Service Department has agreed that the service needs improvement. But nothing has been done!
The Urban Service Department cannot give shortage of trucks or workmen as an excuse. There are now more than twenty new trucks and there is no shortage of workmen. Ten percent of the working population is unemployed.
Why is the service so inefficient? The answer is that there is no proper supervision of the workmen.
In some streets the garbage is collected only once a month because the workmen are not supervised. In other streets, collection in more frequent but half of the garbage is left in the road. The workmen are too lazy to pick it up and put it in the trucks.
In some parts of the colony, house-holders are dumping their garbage on the waste land. This is dangerous and an unhealthy to do. In autumn, the color of the leaves changes into beautiful yellow, red, and brown. Do you know how this happens? To answer that question, first we have to understand about leaves.
Leaves are the food factories of plants. Plants take water from the ground through their roots and they take carbon dioxide from the air. Plants need glucose for energy and for their growth.
The plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose. The process is called photosynthesis and the substance that helps this photosynthesis process is called chlorophyll. This chlorophyll makes plants look green.
As summer ends and autumn comes, the days get shorter and shorter. The trees "know" that they have to be ready for winter. During winter, there is not enough sunlight or water for the photosynthesis process. The trees will rest, and use the food that they have stored during summer. The trees begin to close their food factories. The green chlorophyll substance disappears from the leaves. As the leaves begin to lose their green color, they change into beautiful yellow and orange.
In some trees, like maple tree, glucose is trapped in the leaves after the photosynthesis process stops. Sunlight and cool rights turn the green color of the leaves into red. Oak leaves become brown because of wastes that are left in the leaves. This combination of red and brown makes the trees look very beautiful in autumn.
